Pipers around the world are re-discovering the traditional sound of a cane practice chanter reed.  The Apps cane practice reed is made with a blend of new technology and traditional material. The reed has a full rich woody sound that only traditional cane can produce. A . Your practice chanter will sound more like an orchestral instrument. 

It is rather more expensive than a disposable plastic reed because it is much more durable. Similar in size and shape to the Apps smallpipe reed, the cane practice chanter reed is finished with a copper bridle that sets the pitch, blowing strength and mouth size.

The pitch is the same as most plastic practice chanter reeds and blows with the same resistance. A huge advantage over plastic is that this reed loves moisture. The cane reed is designed to be played fully saturated. This means you can play pretty much all day without needing to dry out the chanter and reed. If the reed is first soaked in 1% hydrogen peroxide there is no danger of mold forming (although I recommend checking regularly and re-soaking if necessary. )

The reed is built well and if treated correctly, will last for years. 

Cane practice reeds have been played for hundreds of years.

For some of us, there just is no comparison.
